Shipboard training in climate and ocean sciences – Junior teacher

Welcome to the application portal for the NoSoAT OceanCapX expedition for junior teachers, conducted by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) with the support of the Partnership for the Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO), the Nippon Foundation (NF), the University of Galway and the Chair of Climate Sciences, Trinity College, Dublin.

The AWI will conduct its fifth training expedition onboard the RV Polarstern, Germany’s largest research vessel. The expedition will start on 20 November from Bremerhaven, Germany. The arrival port will be Walvis Bay, Namibia, and the arrival is scheduled for 17 December 2025. At least a pre-cruise workshop will be included.

Besides training regular scholars, for the first time, we will train young scientists to become future instructors for shipboard trainings. We aim for young scientists (Master's or PhDs) with experience in seagoing expeditions who are also committed to teaching.

Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Educational background
  • Motivation for participating in the programme
  • Commitment to building capacity in home country, especially to teaching and outreach activities
  • Ability to communicate in English

The selection process is based on the objective of gender and regional balance. Excellent candidates from the global south will be given preference.
